Today in class we worked on 5.4 The Discriminant. We looked at how we can determine the number of solutions to a quadratic equation without actually calculating the roots.

Today in class we went over 5.3 Solving Quadratic Equations Using the Quadratic Formula. We used the process of completing the square on the general form of a quadratic equation to generate a formula for solving quadratic equations.
Assignment: p. 202 #1 ab, 2 a, 3 adefh, 4 acegk, 5 ad, 6 ab, 7 a In the second half of class students worked on a Solving Quadratic Equations Worksheet. We started today's class by going over 5.2 Solving Quadratic Equations by the Square Root Principle. This concept reviews the idea of solving an equation by doing inverse operations. The added operation is square rooting the variable to remove a square. When we do this we get 2 answers - a positive and a negative.
Assignment: p. 195 #1, 2 a - f, k, 5 a, 6 aci, 7 ac In the second half of class students wrote their Ch. 3/4 Quadratic Functions Test. Today in class we went over 5.1 Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring. This section was a review from solving both radical and rational equations.
Assignment: p. 187 #1, 3 acd, 4, 5 a, 6 ace, 7 every other letter, 8 abd, 9 ace Today in class we went over the Ch. 3/4 Quadratic Functions Test outline. Students were given a practice test to work on. The Test will be written on Wednesday. Students also worked on 3.6 Chapter Review and 4.4 Chapter Review.
Assignment: p. 157 #1 - 6 p. 183 #1 - 9 Today in class we finished our notes on 4.3 Applications of Quadratic Functions.
Assignment: p. 179 #1, 2, 5 ab, 6, 8, 9, 11 - 15 Students were also given an Applications of Quadratic Functions Worksheet to complete and hand in on Monday. Today we started class by going over 4.2 Vertex of a Parabola. This section develops a formula for the values of h and k from standard form.
Assignment: p. 170 #(1 - 3) every other letter Students were also given a Graphing Parabolas in General Form Worksheet to complete and hand in. In the second half of class we started 4.3 Applications of Quadratic Functions. We will finish this section tomorrow. Today in class we went over 4.1 Completing the Square. We learned how to change a quadratic function from general form to standard form by completing the square.
Assignment: p. 162 #3 a-e, 4 abcdfgijk, 6 acdfh Students were also given a Finding the Equation of a Parabola Worksheet to complete and hand in. Today in class we went over 3.5 Equations of Parabolas. We used 3 forms of the quadratic function to find the equation of the parabola given various properties of the parabola.
Assignment: p. 153 #1 abcf, 2 acg, 3 acd, 5, 6, 9 Students were also given a Graphing Parabolas in Standard Form Worksheet to complete and hand in. Today in class we went over 3.3 Graphing y=a(x-h)^2 which is a horizontal translation of the parabola.
Assignment: p. 141 #1 ab, 3 abc, 4, 5, 7 Students were also given a Transformations of Parabolas Worksheet to complete and hand in.
